EAT Smart Move More… Catawba County Receives a grant for Physical Activity and Healthier Eating Project

Catawba County Public Health Department and Catawba County Health Partners’ Eat Smart Move More… Catawba County committee was selected to receive a statewide grant for $19,000 to support three school interventions to increase physical activity and to eat healthier. Across the state, 20 Eat Smart, Move More…North Carolina Community Grants are being funded through special grants to local health departments. Totaling over $300,000, the grants come from the N.C. These three school-based programs are designed to help children increase physical activity and make healthier food choices in the area school districts—Take 10!, Winner’s Circle and Food for Thought. The Take 10! Physical activity curriculum incorporates physical activity into other classroom subjects such as science and math. The Winner’s Circle healthy dining program identifies healthy foods and drinks on menus and serving lines with a purple and gold star and fork logo. Food for Thought is a nutrition education curriculum that the schools will use to teach children how the importance of healthy eating.

Obesity is increasing in all age groups, races, ethnicities and genders across the U.S. and in North Carolina. The growing epidemic of obesity in youth and adults, if not reversed, could wipe out the gains made in reducing heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other chronic health problems, according to the national Department of Health and Human Services.

  • 44% of 340 Catawba County 5th graders were at risk for being overweight or were overweight in 2004.
