| Who We Are: A.S.A.P.s overall goal is to reduce underage drinking in Catawba County. A.S.A.P. is collaborating with community partners to implement a comprehensive plan aimed at impacting the causes of the problem: easy availability of alcohol to minors and permissive community attitudes toward youth alcohol use. Current initiatives are funded by the North Carolina Preventing Underage Drinking (NCPUD) grant.
Current Initiatives Not Here This initiative conducts outreach to community sectors Neighborhoods, Merchants, Law Enforcement, Parents and Youth that play key roles in changing the environment of easy alcohol availability for youth. Merchant Relations Coalition volunteers regularly conduct alcohol purchase surveys to encourage off-premise retailers to check I.D. when selling alcohol. Orange Band Campaign During Alcohol Awareness Month in April, A.S.A.P. members, merchants and bartenders/wait staff at local establishments wear orange wrist bands to show that they will not sell alcohol to underage customers. Talk It Up, Lock It Up This initiative encourages parents to talk with their children about the consequences of underage drinking and to proactively monitor access to alcohol in the home. Keys to Life In partnership with law enforcement and area schools, Keys to Life events re-enact a drinking and driving accident scene to emphasize the consequences of underage drinking.
